The Gastro-Oesophageal Valve

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Neil_Hawkes] Neil Hawkes The Gastro-oesophageal Valve has two components: the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle (the circular muscle fibres which squeeze the passage shut) and the slit-like opening in the diaphragm muscle through which the oesophagus passes (the diaphragm hiatus). Individually these two components are weak, but when working together they provide a tight junction. The function of this junction is very complex, and in the normal situation it is controlled by various reflexes. When we swallow, for example, the junction is required to relax at just the right time to allow food into the stomach, but when we are not swallowing the junction must remain tight to prevent gastro-oesophageal reflux. Problems with the valve There are two main reasons why you may develop problems with your gastro-oesophageal valve. These may occur alone or together. The sphincter muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus may relax too much, or you may develop a fault where the oesophagus goes through the diaphragm - a hiatus hernia. Sphincter muscle problems In some people there may be no obvious explanation why this muscle does not function as it should, but factors that are known to play a part are: being overweight, heavy alcohol consumption, smoking, certain foodstuffs (fatty foods, onions, spicy foods, chocolate and acidic foods) and occasionally prescribed drugs. All of these are more likely to cause problems near bedtime, so that you are at increased risk of reflux when you lie down. Hiatus hernia Sometimes, the hiatus (opening) in the diaphragm is too large, allowing the upper part of the stomach to slip above the diaphragm. The result is that the two parts of the gastro oesophageal valve are no longer aligned, thus reducing its strength and allowing reflux of acid into the oesophagus. Having a hiatus hernia does not always cause symptoms in fact most people do not get any. What hiatus hernias do is make gastro-oesophageal reflux more likely and this is what causes the symptoms. No one knows why a hiatus hernia may develop, but they are known to be extremely common (especially in those aged over 65 years) and often they go undetected, causing no trouble throughout a person’s whole life. What is a Smart Marketing System?

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By Lance Winslow What is a Smart marketing system? Well, a Smart marketing system is not really a known term, but rather a term coined by someone who writes marketing books, does seminars and is a consultant in marketing. It makes sense to coin new phrases and new terms and indeed that is in perfect form of someone who does marketing. To me, I believe a Smart marketing system would be one that would be similar to the one that I developed for by franchising company, which I had founded. I called my marketing system; Bonzai and Blitz Marketing. Whereas the marketing consultant and author who wrote about the Smart Marketing System; talks about a hybrid model of marketing which can be applied to be different types of businesses, I am quite confident that the Bonsai and Blitz marketing that I have created in the real world is far superior in every way, yet both methods are superior to what nearly all businesses out there are doing presently. In fact, we proved it when we marketed our franchise system in 23 states, 450 cities and 110 major markets. We attacked the market and targeted the customers and slammed the competition into the carpet so hard that they gave up. Now that is marketing; it is that Smart marketing? Could I call my marketing system a Smart marketing system? Indeed I probably could; but I chose to call it Bonzai and Blitz marketing. What we learned in this scenario when studying various hybrid marketing plans is that different people have found different ways to market and any marketing system that achieves results in the market place is a Smart marketing system. And that means whether it is my Bonzai and Blitz marketing system or the actual branded; Smart Marketing System by a marketing guru and consultant; it is still marketing and creative marketing which puts together multiple marketing methods towards a single message and a single goal for the company. I believe that in this case anyone would consider that to be Smart marketing. I hope you will consider this in 2006 and develop your marketing plan in a creative, innovative and successful fashion. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Kids’ Favorite Foods

Monday, January 28th, 2008

By Michael Russell If you’re a parent, you know that getting your finicky kid to eat is like trying to push a bolder up a mountain of molasses. It isn’t easy. A kid’s menu, at best consists of about five or six things that he or she will eat. So what’s a parent to do? Well, at a recent survey taken in a small US town, about 100 kids gave the answer to their five favorite foods, not counting desserts. While this survey no way dictates that all kids will answer the same, this should give you a pretty decent idea of what you’re kid will eat if you’re having problems getting food in his or her mouth. So without further ado, our top five kids’ goods. Coming in at number 5 was no surprise. Spaghetti and Meatballs was the overall number 5 choice. Kids seemed to like this more out of the can than home made, however. And no fancy sauces like Marinara. Just plain out tomato or meat sauce was all they needed. Plus, no grated cheese on top. And not too many meatballs. Just 3 or 4 would be enough. Serving your kid a plate of spaghetti and meatballs would be more than enough to put a smile on his or her face. In the number 4 slot was another food that was no surprise. Hamburger on a bun was a sure winner. Again, nothing fancy as far as condiments. No onions was big on the list of yucks. Kids absolutely hate onions and don’t want them anywhere near their hamburger. Just some ketchup is all they require. And the buns have to be hamburger buns. No regular hard rolls and certainly NO seeds. Also, no whole wheat buns or rolls. The third most popular meal on the menu was the hot dog. It was interesting to see that the hot dog was more popular than the hamburger, but not by much. As for how they liked their hot dog, that varied quite a bit. Some kids liked them just with mustard. Others preferred mustard and sauerkraut. And then there was that group of kids who enjoyed their hot dogs with ketchup. Nobody seemed to like relish or anything fancy on their hot dog and NO cheese dogs. That was another big yuck. Just missing the number top spot and coming in at number 2 was fried chicken. Parents, don’t bother making this at home. Overwhelmingly, kids voted on Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken and white meat only. And don’t forget the biscuit that comes with it. They said without the biscuit it isn’t as good. Makes you wonder if they loved the biscuit more than the chicken. Oh and the extra crispy gets a big thumbs up. Finally, coming in at number 1 was macaroni and cheese. Again, don’t try making this at home. This has to be, almost unanimously, Kraft Mac And Cheese. And of course no mac and cheese dish is complete without pouring ketchup all over it. By the time they are done with the ketchup you can just about see the mac and cheese. And there you have it. The top 5 favorite foods of children. So if you’re having trouble getting your kid to eat, you might want to start with these. If you need other favorites outside the top 5, at number 6 was pizza and at number 7 was peanut butter and jelly. Rounding out the top 10 was bologna at 8, salami and cheese at 9 and grilled cheese at 10. How to Get a Date

Friday, January 25th, 2008

By Daniel Okula Step #1- The first impression. Before you approach a girl or women, you need to know a few obvious formalities. Be clean - be sure you are wearing attractive cologne, clean clothes, and fresh breath. Woman notice the smallest details, so bad breath or B.O. will be one of the first impressions of you and you don’t want that. Depending on what kind of girl you want to go after, you should always wear clean, fitting clothes; stains or overlarge clothes are a indication of what kind of lifestyle you live and you want to give her the best impression possible. Right before you approach her, you should put your confident but not cocky and witty but not corny cap on because that is the next thing that girls will be attracted to after your looks. Step #2-The Actual Date. Be a gentleman, open the door for her, take her coat and be considerate. This will be an indication to her that you care about her and that you know how to treat a woman. Take her out somewhere where both of you enjoy going. Having the same common interests is important in a relationship because you will be able to hold a conversation on a topic you and her agree on. This way you will avoid fights. If you are taking her out somewhere to eat, split the price in half between the two of you since this is your first date. By doing this, she will realize that she is an equal to you. If she is one that is very ‘high class’, pay the bill but next time offer to split the bill because if you don’t, she might think of you as ‘the supplier’. Try to hold conversation and let her talk about herself. Ask questions about her career, school or personality, woman love to talk about themselves, simply because they know themselves the best! Don’t mumble, make sure to speak clearly because that might be a sign of an insecurity. If you guys have a conversation where both you of enjoy it, it is a sure way to make plans for your next date. Which brings me to my next point. Step #3- Conclusion of the date. If she is smiling and giving good body language, you might be in for a next date. If you guys were different and different opinioned, it might be a sign to look for another girl. Ask her directly if she would like to go out with you again and if she is making excuses, she isn’t interested, but if she responds positively, get her number and plan a next date. Good Luck ! Parents: Take the SAT Challenge!

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Jacqueline Byrne I keep a box of tissues on the table where I tutor because, as an SAT tutor and college application consultant, I listen to high school juniors and seniors who are so overwhelmed by college pressure that they begin to cry. Not just girls. Not just Ivy League aspirants. High school students are always convinced their parents dont understand them. This time the students are right. Parents dont understand because the college admission process is so much more competitive than it was when most parents applied to college. These are the ten things I wish I could tell parents: 1. I am convinced that parents have to walk a mile in the students moccasins to gain some appreciation for the stress the students are under and to reverse the tension at home. If parents will take an SAT practice test they will feel some of the same anxiety, cringe at their results, and discover that the test is hard. Instead of piling 25 pounds of SAT study books on the desk, parents can commiserate with students over missed problems. Parents and students can become allies rather than adversaries as they face the college admission process. 2. Hire SAT prep tutors who focus on the applicable academic material rather than just the tricks. Increasing a students academic preparation for the test in addition to teaching the tricks increases their confidence on the test and in the classroom; teaching only the tricks makes students more insecure because they are relying on tricks rather than on actual knowledge. 3. Have the tutors keep the parents informed about each session so that the parent tracks progress with the tutor rather than pestering the student for information. 4. Have the student try the ACT. All colleges accept it and some students do better on it than on the SAT. 5. Make learning fun. For example, have the students memorize vocabulary using the book Vocabulary Cartoons by Sam Burchers, et al. Also, have the student do the crossword and other word puzzles in SAT Vocabulary Express, the fun book of word puzzles that will increase SAT scores. I wrote it with Michael Ashley, a nationally known puzzler, so that our students would learn to play with words, an important skill for the new SAT. 6. Emphasize getting good grades rather than good SAT scores. Bs in honors classes are better than As in regular classes. 7. Hire an independent college counselor who will work with the family to create a realistic college list, brainstorm for essay topics, establish deadlines for the student, and check all college applications. High school college counselors are overworked and do not have the time to walk families through the process. 8. Realize that the schools parents attended may not be within reach for their child. The number of high school students planning to attend college has increased dramatically; the student may be well qualified for a particular college and may still not get in. 9. Look for colleges where the student will thrive academically and socially. Choosing colleges based on their name recognition and prestige value is a formula that will increase stress, not decrease it. Everyone else wants to go to those schools, too, making them even harder to get into; they are not necessarily the best place for the student. Loren Popes book, Colleges That Change Lives, is a good place to start. 10. Support your child through a difficult process. Leave the prodding, nagging, and yelling to the tutors and college counselor. The independent college counselor will tell the student to work harder so the parent doesnt have to. Why ruin the students last year at home? Parents can make decisions so that senior year is not be so fraught with anxiety that family members begin to avoid each other. And, I hate it when my students cry. Top Talent Drives the Global Economy

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

By Udit Bhandari The ability to make good “people” decisions is today’s most important source of competitive advantage. All factors of production are easily available and accessible to all organizations but what separates the best from the rest is the people resources. Top leadership talent has always been hard to attain and this has only aggravated in recent times due to globalization, growing worldwide competition, aggressive headhunting practices etc. With growing demand and limited supply top level executives are so much in demand that companies are paying extravagant salaries, bonuses, perks whatever it takes to attract the best brains from across the world. Newly developing economies such as India and China are also giving fierce competition to business leaders who can now earn top dollar working in these countries as well. Companies are in need of capable leaders who can steer their firm steadily into the future. Here is where the role of executive search firms comes into play. An executive search firm is a specialist talent acquisition service provider who enables companies to get their dream candidate on board. Executive search firms have come a long way and are today considered crucial participants in a companies recruitment strategy. Also its not the big boys of executive search who are in the limelight but also small and efficient players such as Servnet which is a specialist firm helping companies hire top talent from India. Normally a smaller firm is able to devote more time and resources for a search assignment resulting in faster and better results. Lung Defects & PPHN Linked to Antidepressants

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Robert_McKay] Robert McKay WHY YOU SHOULD BE CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR NEWBORN IF YOU USE PAXIL Expectant mothers once took prescription medication, drank alcohol (moderately) and smoked cigarettes, as well as illegal drugsall while they were pregnant. None of these activities were seriously frowned upon (except for the illegal drugs of course) until years and years of research had been gathered. Then these seemingly harmless activities were linked to any number of birth defects. Well now its happened again. A once harmless drug, after years and years of research, has been transformed into a leading link possibly contributing to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN). And this decades prescription drug of choice isPaxil. In a recent study released from the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), a fetus whose mother uses the drug during the first trimester is six times more likely to develop PPHN than the general population (those not taking Paxil). But for women who have taken the drug for a considerable amount of time may be causing the baby more harm by stopping the use of the drug, than good. Why? To answer that question you need a better understanding of what Paxil is in the first place. PAXIL AND WHY ITS SO POPULAR Paxil (medical name: paroxetine) is the most common and heavily prescribed antidepressant on the market. Since 1992, when Paxil first hit the market, doctors and patients have turned it into one of the most successful prescriptions antidepressants in history. Doctors regularly prescribe it to patients suffering from depression, panic attacks and phobias. It was also the first drug to be heavily prescribed to patients who suffer from shyness. Patients who have used Paxil for years sometimes find it hard to survive in the everyday world without it. This includes women who are pregnant or who are thinking of getting pregnant. PAXIL LINKED TO PPHN However, studies from other medical institutions and publications have confirmed the FDA report that Paxil could be a leading contributor to Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn. PPHNs symptoms include, but are not limited to: shortness of breath or other kung defects peripheral edema (swelling of the limbs, especially around the ankles and feet) heart defects WHATS BEING DONE The FDA has asked the makers of Paxil to switch the warning on the label from a C to a D (meaning the risk to the fetus has been witnessed in clinical trials). The makers of Paxil are still performing their own studies in an effort to show the benefits Paxil provides a patient outweighs the potential danger to the fetus. So, as you can see, being able to function in the world (the positive uses of Paxil), and the risk to an unborn child are diametrically opposed forces in this issue. Weighing the positives against the negatives is one of the reasons the FDA has issued a warning about the potential side effects of Paxil. Now its up to the consumer to decide if the risk is something they are willing to take. Schmidt & Clark | A National Law Firm specializes in mass torts and drug side effect lawsuits.
